Osprey's wings amputated in Uganda after collusion with plane

A Finnish Osprey had to be rescued after it collided with an airplane in Entebbe, Uganda – The bird flew 6,700 kilometers from Finland to Uganda, a trip that takes seven and a half hours for an aircraft – Its wings had to be amputated following the incident A rescue team dispatched from the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) rescued an Osprey bird that flew 6,739 kilometers from Helsinki, Finland to Entebbe. According to the Daily Monitor, the bird was discovered on runway turf at the Entebbe International Airport by ground staff on Friday, July 29.  “Our team rushed to the scene where they found the Osprey had collided with a plane, shattering both its winfs. We had to amputate them and get the bird back to the center,” said Isaac Mujansi, an officer at UWEC. The origin of the bird was determined after a tag ring on it confirmed the bird belonged to the Finnish Museum of Natural History in Finland. “When we contacted the Finland museum, its call centre confirmed the bird belonged to them. They were very grateful to know its whereabouts,” added Mujansi. It, however, remains unclear if the Osprey made the seven hour flight directly from Finland or made stops in different locations. A medical personnel from UWEC, Barbara Arapo, said the bird had probably flown away to either look for food, a mate or due to climate changes. The Osprey can reach heights of 60 cm with a wingspan of 180 cm.It is a daytime fish eating bird of prey and prefers nesting close to water bodies.
